Departing from San Pedro de Atacama, our journey begins in a vehicle that takes us south, passing through picturesque landscapes and charming towns such as Toconoao and Talabre. After a delicious breakfast, we will meet at the base of the volcano, located 4,000 meters high, ready to begin our ascent. Although the 3 to 4 hour hike to the crater may seem challenging, the reward is incomparable. As we ascend, we feel the lack of oxygen, a constant reminder of the grandeur of nature that surrounds us. Upon reaching the crater, 300 meters deep, we are greeted by the spectacle of fumaroles and the intense smell of sulfur, while we contemplate the stunning views of the Andes Mountains. If conditions allow, we will still have the opportunity to walk another 40 minutes to the summit of the volcano, located at an incredible 5,630 meters above sea level. The descent, which takes around 1.5 hours, will take us back to the starting point, where our vehicle will be ready to take us back to San Pedro de Atacama. However, before embarking on this epic journey, it is essential to be prepared. We recommend wearing several layers of thermal clothing, sturdy hiking shoes, a hat, beanie, gloves, sunscreen and sunglasses.
